Catalan musical traditions celebrated in Alghero and Tarragona

Cultural events celebrating Catalan musical heritage are taking place in Alghero and Tarragona. In Alghero, the 30th edition of Estudi Polifònic will host the ‘Encontres Corals’ on September 19 at the Chiesa Nostra Signora della Mercede. The event features the Coro Polifonico Algherese, directed by Maria Gabriella Mura, performing alongside the Grup Vocàlic from Caldes de Montbui, directed by Xesco Camps. The program focuses on Catalan and Algherese music and language.

In Tarragona, a special concert will commemorate the 150th anniversary of the birth of composer and cellist Pau Casals. Directed by Montse Rios, the Coral de la URV will perform Casals’ ‘Missa de Glòria’ at the Tarragona Cathedral. The program also includes the ‘Hymn to the United Nations’, a work commissioned from Casals in 1970 with lyrics by W. H. Auden, which premiered at the UN General Assembly in 1971.
