Catalan Parliament proposes light sanctions for Silvia Orriols and Vox MP Joan Garriga

The Catalan Parliament’s Commission on the Statute of Deputies has recommended that the parliamentary Board impose a light sanction on Silvia Orriols, leader of Aliança Catalana, and Joan Garriga, spokesperson for Vox. The commission classified their conduct – Orriols’ repeated Islam‑phobic attacks on ERC deputy Najat Driouech and Garriga’s defamatory remarks calling Socialists “drug dealers” and labeling former President Lluís Companys an “assassin” – as a “minor offence” under article 7 of the parliamentary code of conduct. Possible penalties range from a public reprimand to fines of €600‑€12,000. The report also urges a reform of the code to explicitly cover hate‑speech cases. The final decision rests with the parliamentary Board, chaired by Josep Rull.
