Catalan Parliament publicly admonishes Sílvia Orriols over Islamophobic remarks
The Mesa of the Catalan Parliament approved a public admonishment of Aliança Catalana leader Sílvia Orriols for Islamophobic attacks directed at ERC deputy Najat Driouech. The parliamentary commission deemed seven instances of Orriols’ remarks a "very serious" breach of article 7 of the chamber’s code of conduct, which requires an exemplary and respectful attitude. The sanction will be published in the Official Bulletin, read aloud at the next plenary session, and added to Orriols’ parliamentary dossier; no monetary fine was imposed.
In the same decision, the Mesa also chose to publicly admonish Vox spokesperson Joan Garriga, who had previously faced complaints for disparaging remarks about socialists and a former Catalan president. The commission recommended a range of possible penalties, from no sanction to fines up to €12,000, but the Parliament opted for a public reprimand for both deputies. The move follows earlier parliamentary admonishments, such as that of Junts deputy Francesc de Dalmases for inappropriate conduct toward a journalist.
