Catalan parties Aliança Catalana and CUP confront candidate shortages ahead of 2027 municipal elections

Aliança Catalana, a far‑right independentist party in Catalonia, currently holds two seats in the regional parliament – one each from Girona and Lleida – after attaining just 2.86% of the vote in Barcelona. Party leader Sílvia Orriols hopes to expand representation dramatically, with forecasts suggesting a jump to 19‑20 seats, but the party has struggled to present candidate lists for major municipalities, including Barcelona, where no candidates have been named.

At the same time, the left‑wing CUP is debating whether to run in one of the four provincial capitals for the upcoming municipal elections. After losing its two congressional seats in the last general election, the party is weighing a withdrawal from the ballot in a capital city, a joint list with the Comuns, or maintaining an independent candidacy. CUP officials emphasize internal analysis and the desire to remain useful from outside formal institutions rather than seeking power for its own sake.
