Catalina Island medical helicopter crash kills three

A REACH Air Medical Services helicopter crashed into the Pacific Ocean shortly after departing Catalina Island near Los Angeles on the evening of September 30. The aircraft, a Eurocopter EC 135 P2, was performing a medical transport flight to the mainland when it went down near Pebbly Beach.

Authorities confirmed that three people died in the accident: the male pilot, a female nurse, and a 45-year-old female patient who was being transported due to a severe allergic reaction. Rescuers initially recovered four people from the water, including two survivors who were hospitalized in stable condition. Divers from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department later located the patient’s body within the wreckage, which lies approximately 200 to 240 feet underwater.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) are investigating the cause of the crash. Search and recovery efforts involved the US Coast Guard, Los Angeles County Fire Department, and local emergency personnel.
