Catalina Island medical helicopter crash

Overview

A REACH Air Medical Services helicopter crashed into the Pacific Ocean near Pebbly Beach, Catalina Island, on the evening of September 30. The aircraft, a Eurocopter EC 135 P2, was conducting a medical transport flight to the mainland when the accident occurred.

Initial reports confirmed three fatalities: the pilot, a nurse, and a 45-year-old female patient being treated for a severe allergic reaction. Two other individuals on board survived and were hospitalized in stable condition. Search and recovery operations involved the US Coast Guard and local emergency personnel, with wreckage located approximately 200 to 240 feet underwater.

Subsequent reports identified the deceased as pilot Steven “Steve” Robinson, 59, a former U.S. Marine Corps pilot, and flight nurse Jessica deVries, 48. The patient was identified as Catalina Romero, a resident of Avalon. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) are investigating the cause of the crash.
