Spain and Greece hit by severe storms causing deaths and widespread damage

Severe storms and torrential rainfall have caused widespread destruction across Spain and Greece. In Catalonia, Spain, the extreme weather has resulted in at least two deaths—one in Tordera following a wall collapse at a campsite and another in Montornès del Vallès in a flooded garage. Emergency services have responded to thousands of incidents, including over 6,700 calls to the 112 line, and are currently searching for a missing person in Pineda de Mar. The storm also caused significant logistical disruptions, with Barcelona El Prat airport cancelling 385 flights over the weekend.

In Greece, the island of Crete has been hit by devastating weather, with damage estimated to approach 20 million euros. Local authorities reported over 500 emergency calls in four days, involving water pumping, tree removal, and citizen evacuations. In the Chania region, massive runoff from the Samaria Gorge has caused significant environmental changes, with water levels exceeding 800mm in some areas.

Across the Mediterranean, authorities have issued various alerts, including warnings for potential river overflows in the Ebro basin and mobility restrictions in several Spanish regions.
