Severe storms and flooding in Spain and Greece

Overview

Extreme weather events have impacted Spain and parts of the Mediterranean, characterized by record rainfall and severe storms.

In late September, Spain experienced significant fluctuations, with Extremadura recording a record 123 liters of rain per square meter in Guijo de Granadilla. This triggered red alerts for the Alagón basin and necessitated the evacuation of residents in Corte de Peleas. Concurrently, Andalucía faced instability with yellow warnings for rain and storms.

By early October, the weather intensified into severe storms causing fatalities and widespread destruction. In Catalonia, at least two deaths were reported—one from a wall collapse at a campsite in Tordera and another in a flooded garage in Montornès del Vallès. Emergency services managed thousands of incidents, including over 6,700 calls to the 112 line, and are searching for a missing person in Pineda de Mar. Barcelona El Prat airport faced major disruptions, cancelling 385 flights.

In Greece, Crete faced devastating weather with damage estimated to approach 20 million euros. Authorities reported over 500 emergency calls involving water pumping, tree removal, and evacuations. In the Chania region, massive runoff from the Samaria Gorge caused significant environmental changes, with water levels exceeding 800mm in some areas.

Following these events, recovery efforts have begun in Spain. At the prehistoric settlement of Algaba de Ronda, reconstruction is underway after intense winds exceeding 90 km/h caused the collapse of nearly all the site's cabins earlier this year.
