Spain readies public for 2026‑2028 solar eclipse trio with protected glasses and 3CLIPSE planetarium program
The Diputació de Tarragona will distribute 100,000 certified solar‑eclipse glasses to municipalities of up to 2,500 residents and to priority sites with up to 20,000 inhabitants, covering up to 70 % of the local population. Deliveries start on 15 July so that residents can safely view the total eclipse on 12 August 2026.
The Parc Astronòmic del Montsec launched the immersive film “3CLIPSE”, a full‑dome documentary explaining the three Iberian eclipses of 2026, 2027 and 2028. The film, shown in Catalan, Spanish and English, debuted on 26 June and is being screened in more than 30 planetariums across Spain and Portugal, including Gérgal and the Parque de las Ciencias in Granada. Funded by the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT) and the Ministry of Science, the project combines scientific explanation with a narrative of a grandmother and granddaughter to promote safe observation.
Together, the glass‑distribution programme and the nationwide 3CLIPSE outreach aim to educate millions of citizens about the rare eclipse trio and ensure that the August 2026 event, the first total solar eclipse over the peninsula since 1905, is observed safely.
