Catalonia faces energy debates amid AI data center expansion
The rise of artificial intelligence is driving a surge in demand for data centers in Catalonia, prompting debates over energy consumption and infrastructure. The regional government has identified 26 potential projects that could require a combined 2,000 megawatts of power, designating seven priority zones for deployment to ensure digital sovereignty.
However, the expansion faces significant hurdles. Industry representatives, such as Equixing, note that saturated distribution networks make accessing electricity difficult. Environmental groups, including Ecologistes en Acció, have warned of “energy gentrification,” arguing that these facilities consume massive amounts of electricity while providing relatively few jobs compared to traditional industrial plants.
To address these challenges, the industry is shifting toward greater energy efficiency and sustainable practices. The integration of AI requires higher energy densities and more advanced cooling systems, alongside the adoption of edge computing and micro data centers to reduce latency. Modern strategies now emphasize real-time monitoring, predictive analytics, and modular solutions to optimize costs and meet global emission reduction goals.
