Catalonia intensifies wild boar control to eradicate African Swine Fever

The Government of Catalonia has entered the final phase of its plan to eradicate African Swine Fever (ASF) within high-risk zones. Following the confirmation of five new cases in wild boars—four in Barcelona and one in Sant Cugat—authorities are intensifying efforts to eliminate the virus by the end of the year.

Control measures include increased wild boar captures in urban areas, the use of traps, and the systematic location and removal of carcasses. The containment zone is currently delimited by road infrastructure and specialized fencing to limit animal movement. Officials have emphasized the need for strict biosecurity protocols and increased surveillance to prevent vandalism of capture systems.

While local residents and some municipal leaders have called for the progressive reopening of restricted areas like Collserola Natural Park, the government maintains that any relaxation of restrictions will depend on epidemiological data and the disappearance of transmission risks. The Unió de Pagesos has also urged the maintenance of restrictions to protect the swine sector.
