Spain animal disease outbreaks 2026
Overview
In late July 2026, Spanish authorities reported simultaneous outbreaks of two animal diseases. The Catalan government announced four new cases of African swine fever in wild boar, raising the total to 64 foci and 372 infected animals across 13 municipalities. Control measures included intensified carcass searches, reinforced fencing, capture traps and heightened bio‑security on farms.
In Galicia, officials confirmed a new focus of bluetongue virus serotype 8 on a cattle farm in Meira, Lugo. This was the third bluetongue focus reported in the region that year, following earlier detections of serotypes 3 and 8. Authorities stressed that bluetongue does not affect humans, urged voluntary vaccination of cattle and sheep, and advised farmers to reduce vector breeding sites and disinfect animals and facilities.
By mid-August 2026, the African swine fever situation in Catalonia evolved with four additional cases identified in Barcelona, Molins de Rei, and Esplugues de Llobregat. These cases were found via carcasses in the environment and a vehicle collision. Since the outbreak’s inception in late November 2025, the total number of positive wild boar cases has reached 379 across 13 municipalities.
To manage the spread, authorities have deployed 884 personnel, including intervention groups, and captured 306 wild boars in high and low-risk zones within a single week. Public access to the Collserola natural area and specific zones in Sant Cugat remains restricted as control efforts continue.
