Greece wildfire near Athens burns 6,700 ha, forces mass evacuations

A forest fire that started in the Beocia region of Greece has spread to the Attica area, burning about 6,700 hectares and destroying more than 100 houses. Strong winds have driven the blaze toward the industrial zone of Megara, about 35 km west of Athens, prompting the evacuation of thousands of residents from dozens of villages. Civil protection ordered the evacuation of 500 people in twelve small towns, while 450 firefighters, 126 fire trucks and 24 aerial units have been deployed. Two people were detained for alleged negligence involving a private electricity transmission network that sparked the fire. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said the government has increased investment in civil protection, but warned that extreme weather can overwhelm planning.

During the firefighting effort, two firefighting helicopters collided, killing a Romanian pilot and a Greek co‑pilot; the other crew, a Romanian and a British pilot, survived with injuries. The incident highlights the hazardous conditions faced by emergency crews. The fire also prompted a temporary shutdown of Hungary’s only nuclear plant due to low Danube water levels, underscoring the broader regional impact of the heatwave and drought that have fueled wildfires across southern Europe.
