Catalonia launches Gastrorecup initiative to combat food waste

The fifth edition of the Gastrorecup initiative has launched in Catalonia to combat food waste. The campaign, promoted by chef Ada Parellada and the Department of Agriculture, involves more than 100 participating restaurants.

Participating establishments offer special menus priced at twenty euros, utilizing ingredients that were excluded from commercial circuits due to aesthetic imperfections or excess production. This initiative follows data from the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture indicating that households are responsible for up to 97.5% of recorded food waste. In Catalonia, studies estimate an average of 21.56 kilograms of organic waste per person annually.
