Sustainability and waste management initiatives in Catalonia
Overview
Catalonia has implemented several regional initiatives focused on food waste reduction and improved resource management.
The Gastrorecup initiative, a collaboration between the Department of Agriculture and chef Ada Parellada, launched its fifth edition to combat food waste. The campaign involves over 100 restaurants offering special menus using ingredients previously excluded from commercial circuits due to excess production or aesthetic imperfections.
In the Garrigues region, the municipality of Albagés has implemented a waste management model using smart container islands equipped with sensors and artificial intelligence. This system has reportedly maintained a recycling rate of 70.6% while reducing management costs compared to door-to-door models.
Additionally, the Baix Ebre County Council introduced the ‘Obrador Compartit’ (Shared Workshop) in Deltebre. This facility provides small producers and entrepreneurs access to professional kitchen infrastructure, such as industrial ovens and vacuum packaging, to facilitate the transformation and commercialization of agri-food products.
