Catalonia Les Gavarres Wildfire Continues as Crews Battle Re‑sparks

Firefighters have worked on roughly 80 % of the perimeter of the Les Gavarres wildfire in the Empordà region, but the blaze remains uncontrolled. Operative chief Eduard Martínez said dozens of re‑ignitions of varying intensity are still being recorded, especially on the left‑hand third of the front and the right‑hand third of the flank. Aerial units and ground crews are focused on containing these hotspots, and the operation cannot be declared finished today.

Martínez warned, “We have to wait these two or three hours to see how the situation evolves. For now we are working very intensively and investing many resources.” He also stressed, “We must still strive hard to be able to declare it controlled.” Rural agents reported cyclists entering the closed forest area, prompting restrictions on sporting activities. The fire, which has already burned about 2,200 hectares, is part of a series of vegetation fires across Catalonia, including incidents in Comiols, Sentmenat and the Anoia region, all of which are being tackled with extensive land and aerial resources.
