Catalonia olive oil production expected to fall by 35%
Olive oil production in Catalonia is expected to drop significantly this season, with the Federation of Agricultural Cooperatives of Catalonia (FCAC) forecasting a total of 25,500 tonnes. This figure is approximately 4,000 tonnes below the historical average for the region and represents a 34.6% decrease compared to the previous campaign.
The decline is attributed to a lack of rainfall during the spring and summer months. While some recent rains in areas like Camp de Tarragona have helped, the water arrived after the fruit was already nearing harvest. In the Baix Ebre and Montsià regions, which are primary production zones, production is expected to fall by as much as 60%.
In addition to drought conditions, recent storms in the Ebre regions have caused damage to infrastructure, farms, and roads, potentially complicating the harvesting process.
