Catalonia plans Mediterranean monk seal reintroduction
The Generalitat de Catalunya is preparing a project to reintroduce the Mediterranean monk seal (Monachus monachus) to the Catalan coast, a species that has not been seen in the region since 1973. The initiative aims to restore ecological balance by relocating specimens from Atlantic African colonies, specifically from the Cabo Blanco area between Mauritania and Western Sahara.
The plan, which could begin in 2027, involves moving approximately 15 to 20 animals annually to key locations such as Cap de Creus and the Balearic island of Cabrera. The strategy also seeks to strengthen Atlantic populations in the Canary Islands and Madeira to facilitate genetic exchange.
However, the proposal faces significant opposition from local fishing communities and municipal authorities. In areas like El Port de la Selva, fishermen and local governments have expressed concern over the seals' impact on local catches. Critics estimate that an adult seal could consume up to 30 kilograms of fish per day, a figure they claim could threaten the livelihoods of small-scale artisanal fishing vessels.
