Catalonia prepares for 2027 municipal elections amid mayoral turnover

The next Catalan municipal elections are scheduled for the fourth Sunday in May, 23 May 2027. Incumbent mayor Marta Farrés of Girona, who won an absolute majority in 2023, is expected to seek a third term. Her administration has been noted for a focus on local services and infrastructure, while the PSC, ERC and other parties gauge whether they can repeat or improve on their 2023 results amid growing questions about the role of the far‑right and independence‑aligned forces.

During the current legislative term, 92 of Catalonia’s 947 municipalities (9.7 %) have seen a change of mayor. No capitals switched, but notable towns such as L’Hospitalet de Llobregat, Santa Coloma de Gramenet and El Prat de Llobregat did. Turnovers resulted from power‑sharing agreements (25 cases), motions of no confidence (15), resignations for personal or professional reasons (over 30) and two deaths. Additional changes occurred when PSC mayors left to assume positions in the regional government after Salvador Illa became president of the Generalitat, prompting further leadership reshuffles.
