Catalonia pushes for Basque‑style fiscal autonomy as Junts demands ‘key to the box’

Junts spokesperson Míriam Nogueras told Congress that Catalonia should obtain the “key to the box,” allowing the region to collect and manage its own taxes in a model similar to the Basque Country’s fiscal pact. She urged Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez to step aside for a leader who could honour agreements with Catalan separatists and ensure that Catalonia receives the funds it deems due. Nogueras criticised the government’s financing proposal, calling it a “humiliating joke,” and highlighted that state investment per capita in Catalonia is far lower than in other Spanish regions. She appealed to the PSC and ERC to use their parliamentary weight – 19 and 7 seats respectively – to press for a new financing system that would give Catalonia control over its revenue.
