Catalonia reports first week without African Swine Fever positives in high-risk zone
Catalonia has recorded its first week without new positive cases of African Swine Fever (ASF) in its high-risk zone since the outbreak began in November 2025. According to the Conselleria de Agricultura, Ganadería, Pesca y Alimentación, 302 samples analyzed during the most recent week all returned negative results.
Despite this development, authorities are maintaining all existing biosecurity restrictions and eradication measures. The government noted that the crisis is not yet considered over, as European protocols require a full year without new positive cases to regain status as an ASF-free region. During the past week, 333 wild boars were captured within the infected zones.
Since the start of the outbreak, a total of 11,331 wild boars have been analyzed, resulting in 379 positive cases. There are currently 67 notified outbreaks, including 3 primary and 64 secondary foci. While the lack of new cases provides some relief, the livestock sector continues to face economic challenges, with live animal prices currently trading below production costs.
