Catalonia sees drop in evictions while Tarragona records surge in social‑housing applicants

In Catalonia, the number of eviction orders fell 55.5% year‑on‑year in the first quarter of 2026, with 921 executions recorded. The region remains the leader in eviction filings, followed by the Valencia Community and Madrid. The decline follows the end of the anti‑eviction moratorium on 26 February and new procedural requirements, including mandatory mediation and court reorganisation, which have slowed the reactivation of eviction proceedings.

The Catalan and Barcelona administrations are offering a range of rental‑aid schemes for 2026. The "Bo de Lloguer Jove" provides up to €250 a month for tenants under 35, while separate subsidies target seniors over 55, single‑parent families, emergency cases, and people over 65. Application windows vary, with the youth aid programme opening on 29 June and closing on 10 July.

Tarragona’s housing registry now lists more than 2,200 households waiting for social housing, a 60 % rise after the announcement of 192 affordable apartments at the Les Oliveres development. Applicants must meet income and residency criteria, and the allocation of the new units is expected in the final quarter of the year. The city aims to expand public‑private cooperation to increase the stock of affordable rentals.
