Catalonian towns install Stolpersteine to honor Nazi victims

Municipalities in Catalonia are installing Stolpersteine, or ‘stumbling stones’, to commemorate local residents who were victims of Nazi deportation and Francoist repression.

In Sant Martí de Tous, a ceremony is scheduled for October 24, 2026, to honor Domingo Compte Marimon. The installation of the commemorative stone, created by artist Gunter Demnig, follows years of research by historian Xavier Tort Bisbal. The project aims to restore the identity of persecuted individuals and preserve the memory of those deported to Nazi extermination camps.

Similarly, Cervià de Ter recently held a tribute involving the placement of four Stolpersteine. The event included a guided tour of the biographies of Lluís Bagué, Venanci Rosell, Pere Galià, Enric Ventalló, and Josep Llorà. The initiative, supported by the Memorial Democràtic, seeks to make historical memory tangible and raise awareness against hate speech by honoring the dignity of past victims.
