Catalonia's 2025 power mix dominated by nuclear as renewables slip

In the 2025 electricity balance for Catalonia, nuclear generation remained the leading source, supplying 55.8% of the total 42.3 TWh produced. Renewable sources fell to 21.3% of the mix despite a 3.1% rise in absolute output, because combined‑cycle plants grew 15.6% after the April blackout.

Hydroelectric power contributed 8.9% and photovoltaic solar reached 5.8%, overtaking wind for the first time as wind output dropped 16.9% due to grid constraints. Total electricity demand grew 3.8% to 43.1 TWh, pushing the region to import 5.8 TWh (12.4% of demand), the highest import share since 2010.

The three Catalan nuclear reactors at Ascó I, Ascó II and Vandellòs II are scheduled for closure in 2030, 2032 and 2035 respectively. Meanwhile, the government is accelerating solar capacity, adding more than double the photovoltaic power installed at the end of 2025, and is advancing the PLATER plan for renewable deployment to 2050, including a new offshore‑wind trial in the Gulf of Roses.
