Catalonia's 2025 electricity mix

In early June 2025 a report showed nuclear 55.8 % of Catalonia’s generation while renewables were 21.3 %. By July the renewable share had fallen to 15.3 % as wind output dropped sharply; nuclear still supplied about half of demand (≈50 %) and imports rose to roughly 20 % of consumption, raising concerns about energy sovereignty.

A July 2026 report from the Observatori de les Energies Renovables de Catalunya (OBERCat) confirmed the 15.3 % renewable share for 2025, noting that renewable generation fell 3.1 % to 6,941 GWh while total demand rose 2.7 %. Imports (7,145 GWh) exceeded the combined renewable output for the first time, prompting warnings of a loss of sovereignty. Wind production declined 16.8 % YoY to 5.2 % of demand, solar grew 17.5 % but contributed only 1.1 % of demand, hydro supplied 8.4 %, nuclear remained at 50.4 %, fossil fuels at 15 %, and imports at 20 %.

An accompanying analysis highlighted that Catalonia’s electricity consumption continues to outpace its own generation, making it Spain’s highest‑demand autonomous community, while the neighbouring Basque Country recorded a 7.5 % drop in June demand, driven by industrial slowdown. The contrasting trends underline divergent regional energy dynamics within Spain and the difficulty Catalonia faces in meeting its 2030 clean‑energy target.
