Catalonia's energy deficit contrasts with Basque Country's reduced electricity demand

Catalonia is consuming far more electricity than it generates, making it Spain's highest‑demand autonomous community. Annual demand rose 2.7% while renewable generation fell 3.1%, forcing the region to import increasing amounts of power, mainly from Aragon and to a lesser extent France. Nuclear output from the Ascó plant now supplies over half of the region's electricity, underscoring the challenge of meeting the 2030 renewable target.

In the neighbouring Basque Country, electricity consumption dropped 7.5% in June compared with the same month a year earlier, driven chiefly by a 21.3% fall in industrial use and a 9.4% decline in steel production. Domestic, building and service sectors saw modest gains, and overall annual consumption is down 1.4%. Gas use rose slightly in June but remains 2.4% lower on a yearly basis. The opposing trends highlight divergent regional energy dynamics within Spain.
