Catalonia's renewable electricity share falls to 15.3% in 2025

The Observatori de les Energies Renovables de Catalunya (OBERCat) reported that renewable sources covered only 15.3 % of the region's electricity demand in 2025, down from 16.2 % in 2024. Renewable generation fell 3.1 % to 6,940.68 GWh while total demand rose 2.7 % to 45,250.58 GWh. For the first time, electricity imports (7,144.97 GWh) exceeded the combined output of all renewable facilities, prompting OBERCat spokesperson Víctor Cusí to warn of a loss of energy sovereignty.

Wind production dropped 16.8 % year‑on‑year, covering just 5.2 % of demand, whereas solar photovoltaic on‑ground grew 17.5 % but contributed only 1.1 % of demand. Hydroelectric power supplied 8.4 % of demand. Nuclear power remained dominant, generating 22,812.07 GWh or 50.4 % of total consumption, followed by fossil fuels (15 %) and imports (20 %). The report highlighted that the pace of new renewable capacity installations is insufficient to meet Catalonia's 2030 goal of 50 % clean electricity.
