Catalonia's Socialist budget passes parliament as opposition amendments fail

The budget presented by Catalonia's socialist government under President Salvador Illa, backed by ERC and Comuns, survived its first parliamentary test on June 4, 2026. All opposition amendments were rejected, with the vote tallying 68 against and 67 in favor, allowing the accounts to move forward.

Economy minister Alicia Romero defended the plan, highlighting its contributions to stability, investment of €4.126 billion, and social spending covering three‑quarters of the budget. She cited agreements on autonomous governance, a new investment consortium, and co‑governance of the Free‑zone Consortium as key advancements.

Meanwhile, Catalan PP leader Alejandro Fernández delivered a harsh critique, labeling the budget a "great socialist crib" and accusing the Illa administration of wasteful spending on numerous public entities and the energy transition apparatus. Fernández warned that such practices squander Catalan taxpayers' money.
