Santa Fe declares water emergency to combat El Niño risks
The Chamber of Deputies of Santa Fe has passed a law declaring a water emergency throughout the province to prepare for extreme weather conditions associated with the El Niño phenomenon. The measure, which was approved unanimously, will remain in effect until April 30, 2027, with a possible six-month extension.
The law establishes a special legal framework to allow the provincial government to act rapidly in response to risks such as heavy rains and flooding. Key provisions include the creation of a $10 billion water emergency fund dedicated to flood prevention, infrastructure repair, and water management works.
Authorized actions include cleaning canals, constructing embankments and defenses, improving rural roads, and maintaining hydraulic infrastructure. The legislation also grants the Executive Branch expanded powers to expedite contracting processes and provide immediate assistance to affected municipalities, including resources for housing, food, and sanitation.
