Buenos Aires deputies approve semi-sanction for Ley Ema

The Chamber of Deputies of the Province of Buenos Aires has granted semi-sanction to the ‘Ley Ema’, a legislative initiative designed to prevent and address digital violence, bullying, and cyberbullying within educational environments. The project, championed by Deputy Mayra Mendoza and inspired by the story of Ema—a teenager who took her own life following the non-consensual dissemination of intimate images—aims to establish a provincial program for the ‘Integral Prevention and Addressing of Digital Violence in Educational Settings’.

The proposed law would modify the Provincial Education Law to include mandatory training for teaching staff and update school protocols regarding privacy, consent, and the ethical use of Artificial Intelligence. It seeks to provide tools for schools to detect early warning signs of digital aggression before they escalate.

In other regional developments, Catamarca Deputy Exequiel Moreno has proposed legislation to ensure the physical well-being of students serving as flag bearers and escorts during school ceremonies, including provisions for hydration and climate protection. Additionally, in La Pampa, the Ministry of Education is utilizing theatrical performances to mark 20 years of Comprehensive Sexual Education (ESI), focusing on digital coexistence and preventing grooming and cyberbullying.
