Catania bans pets on balconies between 10 am and 7 pm during heatwave

Mayor Enrico Trantino of Catania has issued a municipal ordinance, effective until 30 September 2026, that prohibits leaving dogs, cats and other companion animals on balconies, terraces, verandas, rooftops or any outdoor surface directly exposed to sunlight between 10:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. The measure aims to prevent heat‑related suffering such as dehydration and heat stroke during the city’s hot summer months.

Pet owners must ensure continuous access to fresh water, provide shaded and ventilated areas, and protect animals from prolonged sun exposure. Violations carry administrative fines of €25 to €500 and may trigger criminal liability under existing animal‑abuse laws. Enforcement is assigned to the local police, order‑keeping forces and other competent authorities. The ordinance brings Catania in line with similar protective rules adopted by other Italian municipalities.
