Catania Hospital Performs Multi‑Organ Donation of Liver, Kidneys and Corneas
At the Policlinico "G. Rodolico – San Marco" in Catania, Italy, surgeons retrieved a liver, both kidneys and corneas from a woman declared brain‑dead after severe cerebral injury. The donor’s family gave consent for the multi‑organ donation. The procedure was carried out through close cooperation between the University Hospital of Catania, the ISMETT transplant institute in Palermo and the Regional Transplant Center. A medical commission comprising neurologist Daniela Fatuzzo, director Francesco Leonforte and anesthetist Dario Rinzivillo confirmed brain death and donor suitability. ISMETT surgeons performed the liver and kidney retrieval, while eye‑clinic specialists removed the corneas. Hospital director Giorgio Giulio Santonocito thanked the family and the multidisciplinary teams for their humanity and teamwork.
The transplant will provide new hope for patients on waiting lists for liver, kidney and corneal grafts.
