Italian health donation drives expand amid shortages

Entities: DonatoriNati · Avis (Italian Red Cross) · Sandro, Antonio and Vincenzo (volunteer cyclists) · Dora Mazzarino · Paolo Costanzi

Overview

From mid‑April through early August 2026 Italy’s health‑related donation programmes broadened and deepened. Grass‑roots fund‑raisers in Sassuolo and Empoli financed a wireless ultrasound system and neonatal devices, while the Ministry’s “Dai voce al tuo sì” organ‑donation day highlighted record‑high transplant activity. Students in Dalmine won a Lombardy prize for organ‑donation awareness software, and the Guardia di Finanza organised a two‑day blood drive in Ascoli Piceno.

Summer 2026 saw a surge of volunteer‑led events. The Italian Association of Organ Donation and Transplant (AIDO) staged a youth band contest, beach‑volley tournament, theatrical performance, historic car‑slalom and a human‑chain at Aquafan Riccione to promote organ donation. In Basilicata, FIDAS honoured 45 donors at its Festa del Donatore e del Volontario, reporting 9,000 active donors and 497 new registrations in 2025.

AVIS launched multiple campaigns to counter a heat‑wave‑induced drop in blood collections: a Tuscany drive, a permanent centre in Vibo Valentia, and a nationwide “La gratuità ha il nostro volto” campaign from Rome, complemented by regional pushes in Crotone, Molise, Lombardy and Alessandria. Parallel defibrillator expansions placed external devices in Piedmont mountain shelters, Rome restaurants, and numerous public venues, while the Association Gian Franco Lupo donated a unit to Maratea’s civil‑protection team.

Equipment donations continued with a portable Esaote ultrasound for Santa Maria Nuova’s vein‑surgery unit, €100 000 from Comitato per la Vita for an oncology day‑hospital upgrade in Grosseto, and art‑ and furniture gifts to wards in Teramo and Grosseto. Acute blood shortages at hospitals such as Cardarelli in Naples triggered emergency drives, memorial events, and a municipal organ‑donation registration scheme in Brembio. The period culminated in a coordinated “DonatoriNati mobilità il dono” blood‑drive across major cities and the delivery of new ambulances and a neonatal transport unit in Abruzzo, reinforcing Italy’s multi‑layered response to blood, plasma and organ shortages.
