Civitavecchia Port: Authorities seize nearly 9kg of smuggled tobacco

Authorities at the Port of Civitavecchia have seized nearly nine kilograms of smuggled tobacco. The operation was conducted by the Guardia di Finanza in collaboration with officials from the Agenzia delle Dogane e dei Monopoli.

During routine inspections of passengers and luggage arriving from international routes, officers intercepted two Algerian citizens who had just disembarked from a ferry originating in Annaba, Algeria. A search of their belongings revealed 8.695 kilograms of tobacco products, consisting of 400 grams of processed foreign tobacco and 8.295 kilograms of chewing tobacco. The goods were hidden to evade customs controls and tax payments.

The two individuals have been issued administrative fines totaling 43,475 euros, calculated at a rate of 5 euros per gram of illicitly imported tobacco. The seized products are scheduled for confiscation and destruction in accordance with legal procedures.
