Illicit tobacco crackdown & tax hikes widen

In Italy, the Guardia di Finanza seized over 223 kilograms of contraband cigarettes in Torre Annunziata. Recent enforcement in Greece has seen a massive escalation. Following previous operations at Athens International Airport, inspectors from the Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE) have now dismantled an organized smuggling operation, seizing 7.4 million cigarettes—the largest quantity ever discovered in the country. Using intelligence from AADE systems, authorities raided car dealerships and storage facilities, finding contraband in wooden crates reinforced with metal rods to evade X-ray detection. The operation also led to the seizure of several vehicles and heavy machinery, with estimated evaded duties exceeding 1.4 million euros and four arrests made. In Romania, enforcement remains active. During a ‘BLITZ operation’ near the Calafat-Vidin bridge, border police seized 24,198 packs of cigarettes bearing Bulgarian excise stamps from a Bulgarian-registered truck, valued at approximately 725,940 lei. Additionally, in Ilfov County, customs inspectors intercepted two semi-trailers containing over one million cigarettes bearing Moldovan excise stamps.
