Illicit tobacco crackdown & tax hikes widen

Overview

The EU‑wide crackdown on illegal tobacco is intensifying through large-scale seizures and legislative shifts. In Bulgaria, customs inspectors at the Lesovo border crossing seized 1.1 million contraband cigarettes hidden inside hollowed-out aluminum insulation panels. At Sofia Airport, inspectors intercepted six passengers attempting to smuggle 77,200 cigarettes and 5 kilograms of tobacco destined for London. In Hungary, the National Tax and Customs Administration intercepted 1,415 packs of Bulgarian cigarettes hidden within a minibus on the M5 motorway. In Italy, the Guardia di Finanza seized over 223 kilograms of contraband cigarettes in Torre Annunziata.

Recent enforcement in Greece has seen significant activity at Athens International Airport. Following a previous arrest involving 7,008 packs of cigarettes, inspectors from the Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE) recently conducted two major operations. Using a detection dog, officers uncovered 362,800 smuggled cigarettes hidden in 26 packages destined for Germany and Belgium. In a separate incident, an Egyptian passenger arriving from Cairo was intercepted with 114,200 cigarettes found across seven pieces of luggage. The total estimated unpaid duties and taxes from these Greek operations amount to approximately 97,619.70 euros.
