Catania sustainable mobility funds face 8.2 million euro revocation

Ersilia Saverino, a regional deputy for the Democratic Party, has filed an urgent inquiry regarding the revocation of over 8.2 million euros intended for sustainable mobility in Catania.

The funds were originally granted by the Sicilian Region in April 2025 for the “Reti della mobilità dolce per la sostenibilità urbana” project, which aimed to develop and enhance the city's cycling network. However, a decree from the Regional Department of Infrastructure published on September 23, 2026, revoked the financing and the related expenditure commitment.

Saverino is seeking clarification on whether these resources are permanently lost or if they can still be recovered. She emphasized that the funds were intended to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists and to better integrate cycling with public transport through a planned 40-kilometer cycling network.
