Catania urban cycling network funding revocation

Overview

The Municipality of Catania has rejected 8.2 million euros in European Union funds designated for the development of an urban cycling network. The decision, formalized via a regional decree in late September 2026, follows a July note from the mayor. The municipal administration cited the impact of ongoing construction sites on traffic viability as the reason for the withdrawal.

Environmental group Legambiente Catania has opposed the decision, arguing that the project—which involved years of planning since 2019—was not subject to proper municipal board approval or public consultation. The group noted that losing these funds would leave existing bike lanes as isolated, non-functional segments.

In response to the revocation of the “Reti della mobilità dolce per la sostenibilità urbana” project, regional deputy Ersilia Saverino has filed an urgent inquiry. The project, originally granted by the Sicilian Region in April 2025, aimed to create a 40-kilometer network to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists and integrate cycling with public transport. Saverino is seeking clarification on whether the resources are permanently lost or recoverable.
