Catherine Ringer, the iconic vocalist and co-founder of the French rock duo Les Rita Mitsouko, has died at the age of 68. Her family announced that she passed away on the night of September 14, 2026, following a rapid battle with cancer.
Alongside her partner Fred Chichin, Ringer formed Les Rita Mitsouko in 1979, creating a unique musical identity that blended rock, pop, funk, and electronic influences. The duo achieved massive international success with hits such as ‘Marcia Baïla’, ‘Andy’, and ‘C’est comme ça’. ‘Marcia Baïla’ alone sold over one million copies.
Following the death of Chichin in 2007, Ringer continued her career as a solo artist and maintained the duo's legacy through various performances and projects. She was widely recognized for her powerful, irreverent voice and theatrical stage presence. In recent years, she remained a visible figure in French culture, notably performing the national anthem, ‘La Marseillaise’, during a significant constitutional event in 2024.
