Death of singer Catherine Ringer

Overview

Catherine Ringer, the co-founder and vocalist of the French rock duo Les Rita Mitsouko, died in Paris on September 14, 2026, at the age of 68 following a rapid battle with an aggressive form of cancer.

Formed in 1979 with her partner Fred Chichin, the group was noted for a musical style blending rock, pop, funk, and electronic influences, producing hits such as ‘Marcia Baïla’, ‘Andy’, and ‘C’est comme ça’. Following Chichin’s death in 2007, Ringer continued her career as a solo artist.

Her funeral was held privately on Saturday, September 19, at the Montmartre cemetery, where she was laid to rest alongside Chichin. While the family requested a private ceremony, hundreds of fans gathered outside the cemetery to pay their respects from a distance. The service was attended by many prominent figures from the French cultural scene, including Marc Lavoine, Alain Souchon, Nolwenn Leroy, Marina Foïs, Josiane Balasko, and Matthieu Chedid.

Musical tributes were central to the service. Ringer’s son, Raoul Chichin, performed on guitar, including renditions of the band's famous hit ‘Marcia Baïla’. Additionally, artist Rahim Redcar performed Queen’s ‘Who Wants to Live Forever’, and actress Andréa Bescond delivered a tribute to her friend.

In the days following her passing, France has continued to mourn the singer, celebrating her as an exceptional and unconventional artist. Tributes have highlighted her unique vocal style and her role as a free-spirited figure in the French music industry, with various artistic honors, including photographic tributes, emerging to commemorate her four-decade career and significant cultural impact.
