Catholic Bishops in Nigeria oppose Foreign Aids Bill

The Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) has issued a communiqué opposing the proposed Foreign Aids (Regulation, Transparency and Disclosure) Bill 2026. During their Second Plenary Meeting in Osun State, the bishops warned that the legislation could undermine humanitarian efforts and fundamental freedoms. They specifically expressed concern regarding provisions that allow authorities to deny registration or refuse renewals if an organization’s activities are deemed ‘not in the national interest,’ arguing this grants excessive discretionary power to government officials and creates unnecessary bureaucracy.

Beyond the aid bill, the CBCN addressed the nation’s deteriorating security and economic conditions. The bishops lamented the impact of kidnapping, banditry, illegal mining, and violence on the economy and human dignity. While acknowledging government efforts to decentralize the police system, they urged that such reforms be implemented for the common good rather than for ethnic, political, or religious interests.

In preparation for the 2027 general elections, the bishops declared December 8, 2026, as a National Day of Prayer and fasting. They called for an end to poverty and bad governance, noting that despite Nigeria’s natural and human resources, poor infrastructure and insecurity continue to hinder the country’s wellbeing.
