Catoira’s Viking Drama Festival Expands with New Market and Women‑Centred Play
The annual Romaría Vikinga in Catoira has opened its third‑edition Viking market, now hosting over 60 stalls and five food trucks. Councilor of Culture Raúl Gómez said the market “demonstrates it is economically viable for artisans and has helped Catoira become an important event despite being a small town.” Organisers aim to transform the market from a medieval theme into a dedicated Viking‑themed venue.
The cultural programme this year features the VikingDrama theatre cycle presenting the play “Torres que resisten.” Directed by the Galician company Ibuprofeno Teatro, the production replaces the previous school‑led management and showcases seven girls aged 11‑13 who create a meta‑theatrical version of the town’s Viking history. Director Santi Cortegoso explained, “it is a technique widely used in dramaturgy, theatre within theatre.” The play highlights women’s roles through the story of Astrid, a 11th‑century Norwegian girl, and includes a cameo by poet Rosalía de Castro, linking historical and contemporary female experiences.
