Cattle and hog futures decline amid market shifts
Livestock futures experienced declines at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, with cattle and hog prices trending lower. October live cattle futures settled $3.75 lower at $220.05 per pound, while September feeder cattle fell $2.15 to $337.20 per pound. Market analysts attributed the cattle price drop to technical and fund selling after contracts fell below key moving averages, alongside concerns regarding beef demand due to high prices.
In the hog market, lean hog futures retreated as wholesale pork prices declined for a third consecutive day. The US Department of Agriculture reported the pork cutout value at $98.92 per hundredweight, marking its lowest level since July 9. The October lean hog contract settled 1.425 cents lower at 82.125 cents per pound.
Adding to the industry shifts, Tyson Foods announced plans to close or sell three of its beef plant and packaging sites. This move comes as a historic US cattle shortage continues to impact the largest US meatpacker.
