Causes of fatigue despite adequate sleep duration

Waking up tired despite getting eight hours of sleep can be caused by various factors beyond mere duration. Experts note that sleep quality is often more critical than the total number of hours spent in bed. Factors such as difficulty falling asleep, frequent nighttime awakenings, or fragmented sleep can prevent restorative rest.

Medical conditions and lifestyle factors play a significant role in persistent fatigue. Sleep apnea is a primary concern, characterized by repeated pauses in breathing during sleep, often accompanied by snoring or gasping. Other potential causes include sleep disorders like insomnia and restless legs syndrome, as well as psychological stressors such as anxiety and depression.

Nutritional and physiological issues can also contribute to low energy levels. These include deficiencies in iron, vitamin B12, vitamin D, and folic acid, as well as dehydration and unbalanced diets. Additionally, underlying medical conditions like hypothyroidism and diabetes may manifest through persistent tiredness.
