Cauvery Water Authority orders daily water release to Tamil Nadu

The Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) has upheld a recommendation from the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee (CWRC) to release 9,000 cusecs of water daily to Tamil Nadu for the next 15 days. This decision, made during a meeting in New Delhi, requires Karnataka to release a total of approximately 11.664 TMC of water. While Tamil Nadu had requested 28 TMC, the authority did not grant the full amount, citing potential future rainfall.

The ruling has triggered intense protests in Karnataka, particularly in the Mandya region. Farmer organizations and activists have organized demonstrations, including a planned water Satyagraha in Srirangapatna and a march toward the Krishna Raja Sagara (KRS) reservoir. Protesters are demanding that no water be released to Tamil Nadu amidst local water shortages.

Separately, the Supreme Court has postponed the hearing of a petition filed by the Tamil Nadu government regarding the water dispute until next Monday. The court had previously requested data from the Karnataka government regarding water flow, and the bench is seeking further verification before proceeding.
