Cavendish banana dominance faces risks from disease and low diversity

The Cavendish banana dominates the global market, accounting for approximately 95% of all banana exports and international trade. This variety became the industry standard due to its flavor, hardiness during shipping, and relative resistance to disease compared to its predecessor, the Gros Michel.

However, the industry faces significant vulnerabilities due to this heavy reliance on a single variety. Threats such as climate change, rising costs, and the Fusarium Tropical Race 4 (TR4) fungus pose risks to Cavendish cultivation. While over 1,000 banana varieties exist globally, most remain niche products.

Red bananas are being explored as a potential alternative to diversify the market. They offer a softer, creamier texture and a similar flavor to the Cavendish, but they face challenges regarding inconsistent sizing and ripening processes. Currently, red bananas maintain a limited market presence in Europe and North America.
