Cavendish banana industry disease and diversity risks

Overview

The global banana industry faces significant vulnerabilities due to a heavy reliance on the Cavendish variety, which accounts for approximately 95% of international trade. This monoculture is threatened by climate change, rising costs, and the Fusarium Tropical Race 4 (TR4) fungus.

In Australia, the TR4 fungus has been detected on an 11th farm in the Tully region of Queensland. Because the soil-borne fungus cannot be eradicated and can survive for decades, researchers are working to develop resistant varieties. Efforts include the commercialization of the genetically modified QCAV-4 Cavendish banana and the evaluation of 30 to 40 hybrids through conventional crossbreeding. The first resistant Cavendish line is expected by 2028.

To address the risks of low biodiversity, alternatives such as red bananas are being explored. While red bananas offer a similar flavor and creamier texture, they currently face market challenges regarding inconsistent ripening and sizing.
