CBAK Energy outlines 12 GWh sodium-ion battery production plan
CBAK Energy Technology Limited has reported internal test results for its 32140 NH-7Ah full-tab sodium-ion cell and announced a long-term plan to reach 12 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of annual sodium-ion battery production capacity. The company’s sodium-ion program, which utilizes a sodium iron phosphate pyrophosphate (NFPP) cathode material, is intended to target energy storage, light electric mobility, and backup power applications. Internal testing showed the cells performing across a temperature span of 110°C, from −40°C to 70°C.
Industry trends indicate a growing interest in sodium-ion technology as a way to diversify raw-material options and reduce sensitivity to lithium price volatility. While CATL is also investing heavily in sodium-ion, some industry forecasts suggest sodium-ion could claim over 60% of the market for new stationary storage and entry-level electric vehicle cells by 2028.
Concurrently, China has been managing its export controls on lithium iron phosphate (LFP) technology. While some restrictions on third-generation LFP were dropped following trade discussions, Beijing has previously implemented layered export licenses for high-density LFP cathode materials and manufacturing equipment.
