CBAK Energy sodium-ion battery production expansion
Overview
CBAK Energy Technology Limited has initiated plans to expand its battery production capacity, specifically targeting a 12 GWh annual output for sodium-ion batteries. The company reported successful internal testing of its 32140 NH-7Ah sodium-ion cells, which utilize a sodium iron phosphate pyrophosphate cathode and demonstrated performance across a temperature range of −40°C to 70°C.
Following these technical developments, CBAK Energy signed a conditional investment agreement with the Nanjing Gaochun Economic Development Zone to establish a 12 GWh project in Nanjing, China. This new facility is designed for manufacturing flexibility, allowing production lines to switch between sodium-ion and lithium-ion cells based on market demand. The company estimates that at full capacity, the project could generate annual revenue between RMB 4.8 billion and RMB 5 billion. This project is distinct from an existing expansion at the company’s current Nanjing site, which aims to increase capacity from 4.5 GWh to 10.5 GWh by the end of 2026.
