CBAK Energy signs agreement for 12GWh battery project in Nanjing
CBAK Energy has signed a conditional investment agreement with the Nanjing Gaochun Economic Development Zone to develop a 12GWh battery project in Nanjing, China. The project will focus on the research, development, and manufacture of large cylindrical battery cells, as well as module assembly and battery-pack integration.
A key feature of the proposed facility is its manufacturing flexibility; production lines will be capable of producing either sodium-ion or lithium-ion cells depending on market conditions and customer demand. CBAK intends to advance the project during the second half of 2027, though implementation remains subject to securing financing and meeting customer demand.
While the company has not disclosed the total capital cost or firm customer orders, it estimates that the 12GWh project could generate annual revenue between RMB 4.8 billion and RMB 5 billion ($712 million to $741 million) at full capacity, based on current lithium-ion pricing.
This initiative is separate from an existing expansion plan at CBAK’s current Nanjing facility. The company aims to add 6GWh of capacity to its existing 4.5GWh operation by the end of 2026, which would bring the site's total annual capacity to 10.5GWh.
