CBF approves gradual reduction of foreign player limits in Brazil
Clubs in Brazil's Série A and B have approved a new regulation from the CBF to gradually reduce the number of foreign players allowed in matchday rosters. Currently, clubs can include up to nine foreign athletes per match. Under the new rules, this limit will decrease to eight players in 2027, seven in 2028, six in 2029, and will reach a cap of five players by 2030.
The decision follows a study commissioned by the CBF indicating that the average age of players in Série A has risen to 28.5 years, with youth players (under-23) accounting for only 13.8% of minutes played. The reduction aims to create more opportunities for domestic talent and address the trend of Brazilian clubs acting more as buyers of South American talent rather than primary developers of young players.
The rule specifically limits the number of foreign players that can be listed for each match rather than forcing clubs to terminate existing contracts. For clubs like Grêmio, which currently has ten foreign players, the change will necessitate strategic planning regarding squad management, renewals, and transfers to ensure compliance with the shrinking matchday quotas.
